1771  (1911)  I did not see any birds peculiar to those parts, except what the Copper Indians call the "Alarm Bird" . . . of the owl genus.
1853  Whenever it sees any creature passing . . . it mounts up into the air . . . keeping up a constant screeching. . . . From this circumstance the Indians of these parts call it the "alarm bird," or "bird of warning". . . .
1911  The Alarm bird is probably the Short-eared Owl, Asio flammeus . . . of the Barren Grounds.
